Dancing For A Cause—02/18/2020

Dancing For A Cause

On February 18, 2020, I performed two Bharathanatyam (a form of Indian Classical dance) pieces at the Central Island Health Care Center for seniors. It was my first solo performance—and within such close proximity to the audience! Along with my solo, my friend Nikita and I also performed a piece together. Our audience were the seniors in wheelchairs at the residency, as well as the nurses and staff who worked there. It was a very different feeling of performance, since the audience was a fairly small group of people, who were on medication and falling asleep, only waking up to the sound of the music. It gave me a rush of happiness when I saw the senior residents moving their arms to the music and pumping their fists into the air when each performance was over. It felt as if I was actually dancing for someone, rather than for a live audience, because of the connections that the residents made as we danced for them. It gave me a new way to feel whenever I performed on stage. The residents really loved our attire, makeup, jewelry, and performance, which made me feel even happier, since the duty of a performer is to make the target audience happy. I felt as happy performing in front of the seniors as I would if I won an award.
